Deep Listening Institute Houston

September 9, 2006

Dear Friends of DLI Houston,

It is with great pride and pleasure that we announce our most important evolution yet. Deep Listening Institute Houston has become Nameless Sound, a non-profit organization based in Houston and independent of the New York organization that mentored it. The change reflects significant growth in our reach and support. It designates Nameless Sound as a distinct entity, vitally connected to the character of its city. It is because of Houston’s openness, sophistication, and diversity that such growth has been possible.

Since 2001, DLI Houston has held a unique place in the arts community as the most consistent and important regional presenter of premiere artists in free improvisation, contemporary jazz, and electro-acoustic improvisation.

More importantly, DLI Houston has been the pioneer of an innovative approach to creative music education. During this milestone, Nameless Sound is able to proudly take stock of its achievements. The organization reaches well over 1000 young people every year in public schools, community centers, and homeless shelters through extended residencies, workshop programs, and ongoing classes. Many of these workshops bring world-class artists into direct contact with youth. The Nameless Sound education program is being internationally recognized as a groundbreaking effort and Nameless Sound is receiving invitations to present its work across the country and abroad. This year, Nameless Sound has added classes for kids with special needs to its programs.

Since 2001, DLI Houston has operated as a branch of Deep Listening Institute, a non-profit organization based in Kingston, New York. As support for our organization grows and our reach expands, it has become important to establish Nameless Sound as a distinct and groundbreaking entity based in Houston.

Nameless Sound would like to thank Deep Listening Institute and Pauline Oliveros for their generous guidance and mentoring over the past five years. We would like to thank our community in Houston for their ongoing support and participation in our programs.

Nameless Sound's Fall classes begin the week of September 11. The Nameless Sound concert season begins on September 24 with a performance by British drummer Roger Turner. Our upcoming concerts are listed on our home page at www.namelesssound.org. For a schedule of classes, please visit our Youth Ensemble page.

Sincerely,
David Dove
