A
skilled musician, respected bandleader, charismatic MC, and gracious
host, Curley Cormier
has been an important part of Houston’s music scene for decades. As the
proprietor of the legendary 5th Ward blues club, The Silver Slipper,
(and as the leader/guitarist of its house band) Curley has cultivated a
vibrant music community, deeply connected to tradition and always alive
with the moment.
Curley and the Silver Slipper have provided special inspiration to the
friends and family of Nameless
Sound.
Searching out great music and authentic experience, I wandered into The
Silver Slipper on one summer evening in 2003. I myself had been
suffering a prolonged case of the blues. On that night, I found my
cure.
As I continued to return, I found much more. Curley and his wife
Dorothy have a sincere charm and an abundance of hospitality. The
Silver Slipper is unpretentious, but dazzling. The amazing band is only
rivaled by the enthusiasm (and participation!) of its audience. Being
at The Silver Slipper is a complete event; where one somehow feels at
home, but also transported to another time. The experience of the music
transcends the event of the performance, and there is a sublime feeling
of being united with the crowd in a moment. Curley has not only managed
to cultivate this very special environment and community, he’s also a
very fine musician and a sharp bandleader. He does it all with style,
humor, and good will. I admire Curley, and can only hope that I bring
some amount of those qualities to my musical world.
The Silver Slipper was born as “Alfred’s”, and opened by Curley’s
father in 1962. It was legend in Houston long before I ever found it.
But for the past 6 years, The Silver Slipper has been one of the main
destinations on Nameless Sound’s “Houston Tour”. Musicians from all
over the world have spread the word about this amazing place to friends
and colleagues back home. For Nameless Sound, it has played a large
role in sharing the great secret of Houston with the world.

About Nameless Sound
The mission of Nameless Sound is to present the best of international
contemporary music and to support the exploration of new methods in
arts education. Nameless Sound presents concerts by premiere artists in
the world of creative music. In addition, Nameless Sound and its
artists work directly with young people in public schools, community
centers, and homeless shelters.
Nameless
Sound’s vision is that creative music is a powerful tool for addressing
critical adolescent issues, such as: diversity, group-awareness,
self-awareness, creative problem solving, peer support, spontaneity,
and vulnerability. Nameless Sound nurtures a new generation of artists
and inspires tomorrow’s creative thinkers.
