The German/Dutch trio of Achim Kaufmann, Frank Gratkowski and Wilbert de Joode improvise with the precision and connectedness of a classical chamber ensemble and the energy and creativity of a jazz combo.  Pianist Achim Kaufmann, saxophonist Frank Gratkowski and bassist Wilbert de Joode keep a concentrated eye on one another, continually weaving a fascinating musical web.  Bruce Gallanter of the Downtown Music Gallery says: “The music is improvised but doesn’t really sound like it. It is much closer to the restraint, thoughtfulness and sublime balance of contemporary classical music than most jazz.  Pieces often move in slow motion so that the sounds can move and explore together, between space and suspense.  Even when they start to swing more quickly, they always sail together as one solid force, no matter that they are still free at all times.”  The trio improvise with the intelligence and clarity of composers, acutely aware of endless variations on form, texture and counterpoint.

As a leader and sideman, Achim Kaufmann is emerging as one of the important new voices in creative music. A broad background that includes contemporary jazz, new music and electronics informs an approach that combines polyphonic pianism with subtly prepared strings and interiors of the piano.

Frank Gratkowski is one of the world's foremost virtuosos of the saxophone. He is a creative and agile stylist whose beautifully elegant lines and sonorous tone can spontaneously give way to startling intervals and jagged rhythms. Then he can turn another unpredictable corner, pushing the saxophone to its limits, in search of sounds that lie in obscure regions of the instrument.

Wilbert De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the European improvised music circuit. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone color, exploration of the outer registers, quirky improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound.
