Best
known for his work with Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, and the ICP
Orchestra, Tristan
Honsinger (b. 1949, Burlington VT)
is one of the most expressive and original cellists in the world of
improvised
music; his flair for theatrical gestures and slapstick humor is balanced by a deeply personal and driving musicality.
Dutch journalist Erik van de Berg writes, “Honsinger is someone who
hasn’t lost his childhood fantasy entirely. His compositions are like a
child’s drawing, or even more like a story from Winnie The Pooh:
awkward and touchingly simple, yet full of deeper meanings for those
who want to see them.”
Based
in
Amsterdam since the late 1970s, the conservatory-trained Honsinger is a
unique voice in contemporary creative music His repertoire includes
classical
motifs, jazz techniques, violently percussive attacks, and hints of
gypsy folk music. Honsinger's experience in improvisation is not
limited to music (or to the formal stage). His interest in opera, his
experience with experimental theater and multi-disciplinary
collaboration, and his time spent as a busker inform his collaborations
and his animated conductions of fellow ICP members are showstoppers.
For this
performance, Honsinger will perform a solo set, after which he’ll be
joined by a group of the finest local improvising musicians and non-musician performing artists,
including distinguished alumni of Nameless Sound’s creative music
education program.
